Rose Cooper, a member of the ukSRC team based at STFC RAL, spoke at the Institute of Physics (IOP) South Central Branch event, Computing for Large-Scale Scientific Experiments: Solving the Big Data Problem, on Tuesday 13 October 2026 at the University of Surrey, Guildford.

The presentation explored the growing challenges of managing and processing the vast quantities of data generated by large-scale scientific experiments. Rose discussed the important role of data centres, high-performance computing (HPC) and data management systems in supporting modern scientific research, enabling researchers to store, transfer, process and analyse increasingly complex datasets.

The talk also highlighted the computing infrastructure and technical capabilities required to support data-intensive experiments, alongside the challenges of preparing for future increases in data volumes and computational demands.

The event was organised by the IOP South Central Branch Committee and brought together those interested in the role of computing and data infrastructure in advancing scientific research.
